At Roe Green Infant School, we believe that science develops skills, attitudes and processes that children need to promote understanding of the ever changing world in which they live. Science is taught on a weekly basis for 1.5 hours using lessons chosen and adapted from the Collins Connect Snap Science scheme. This science scheme of work helps us to embody a clear progression for each pupil. Work is done in a variety of ways with children working as practically as possible in groups, pairs or individually with the main aim to promote scientific enquiry and develop children’s natural curiosity. We record their work in class floor books or individual books. Children’s achievement and progress is recorded on a half termly basis.

We recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life.  Our topics are cross curricular, linking with many other subjects. Science is taught practically wherever possible; we ensure outside learning opportunities are planned throughout the year, for example, seasons, planting, weather. Educational trips or workshops may be linked to a science topic.

 

To help with the teaching and learning, we begin our science topics with a question, which encourages enquiry from pupils and builds on their scientific knowledge and skills, as well as the continual development of scientific vocabulary. This is achieved through further questioning, exploration and investigation as the topics develop. The use of knowledge organisers helps to support the science curriculum by improving vocabulary and embedding understanding. Throughout the science curriculum, we provide opportunities to revisit, revise and build on prior learning.
