Maths : Intent and Implementation
At Roe Green Infant School, we teach maths daily. We strive to make maths, fun, purposeful and interesting. In the Nursery, Maths concepts are taught through practical activities, number rhymes and stories following the development matters statements from the revised EYFS curriculum. Reception use the White Rose scheme of work which gives ideas about how to teach mathematical concepts. There is a focus on using Numicon throughout the EYFS which gives children a ‘hands on’ experience of understanding the value of each digit. The use of Numicon is incorporated in all areas of learning within the EYFS.
In KS1 the MathsBeat scheme is used to underpin our planning. We want children to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. Within the lessons, children are given opportunities to deepen their thinking and maths skills are taught sequentially. Children are supported in their learning through concrete, pictorial and abstract ways of learning.
We want all children to have a positive attitude and passion for maths. Children are encouraged to believe in themselves and to be confident using different strategies to help them solve problems.
Questioning is used to introduce new topics and throughout the lesson, which allows children to explore and explain their initial thinking. Mathematical vocabulary is taught clearly and explicitly in lessons and children are encouraged to use this mathematical language during the lessons. We encourage the children to not only give an answer but also explain their reasoning and understand that making mistakes is part of the mathematical process. The mathematical knowledge that children need to learn is broken down in to manageable ‘chunks’ where required in order for children to keep up and make progress.
Opportunities are provided, where possible, to use maths across the curriculum, which give purpose for learning and time to practise mathematical skills in real life situations.
