Curriculum Statement
Roe Green Infant School is a place where children feel proud to belong and where we aim to provide a happy, friendly and caring environment. As part of our school ethos, we teach the children to be proud to belong to our school community and to be proud to be respectful, resilient, trustworthy, safe & healthy, positive, creative, an achiever, independent, honest and friendly. We want our children to feel safe, secure and valued in an atmosphere which enables them to achieve their true potential.
We pride ourselves on being an inclusive school where everyone can achieve success and develop their skills of independence, whatever their background. We welcome, value and share the culture, traditions and languages of all our families. We hold high expectations of ourselves and all those who work within our school community and these expectations translate to the children in our care. We value each child as an individual with a unique potential for learning. They are enabled from the early stages to be active, enquiring and open-minded thinkers; to be ambitious for themselves and broaden their horizons. Children are encouraged to be independent, take part in new or unfamiliar activities and challenge themselves.
AIMS
Through a broad, creative curriculum we unlock the potential of children and teach them to have a positive and respectful approach to all aspects of school life. The curriculum matches the needs and interests of the children and prepares them well for their next steps. Teachers promote a love for learning, they are reflective practitioners and planning is informed by rigorous monitoring and assessment.
We encourage children to take ownership of, and responsibility for, their learning so that they have the confidence and curiosity to ask questions, solve problems and self-reflect. We develop the children’s resilience to become independent learners and encourage them to be trustworthy, to take risks and learn from their mistakes.
We are proud to be a Rights-Respecting school; this means that all decisions are made in the best interests of the child and are framed by the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child).
Incorporated into our varied curriculum are creative days where children work with specialist staff to broaden and develop their creativity. The school environment celebrates the children’s creativity and learning through interesting and stimulating displays.
PLANNING AND PROGRESSION
Knowledge underpins and enables the application of skill. We strive for children to learn skills alongside acquiring knowledge. The curriculum is designed to ensure that children can develop both knowledge and skills. We do this by having an emphasis on cross-curricular teaching. We believe that this makes the curriculum relevant and meaningful to children and provides more opportunities for contextual learning.
We believe it is our responsibility to develop children’s basic literacy and numeracy skills so that they can engage with and access the wider curriculum. Using the Early Years Foundation Stage 2021 and National Curriculum 2014 as a basis and a variety of schemes, age-appropriate progression in knowledge for each core and foundation subject has been identified. This has been mapped out to ensure coverage of identified knowledge is secured across EYFS and KS1. We carefully select the sequence of when, what and how knowledge is taught and subject faculties work actively to review this aspect regularly.
